Why You Should Attend a Grant Writing Workshop

There are many ways to learn about grant writing; you could use trial and error, research online, attend classes or find a weekend workshop.

While trial and error and researching online may seem to reduce costs over the other options, they waste valuable time and effort and don’t guarantee success. Attending classes can be incredibly valuable, but you may not learn what you need before applying for that grant you’ve been looking at. Workshops offer a ton of information in a short amount of time and give you personal interaction with the experts. If you are looking for the best return on investment with the quickest turnaround, a grant writing workshop is exactly what you need.

These workshops can be live in person or virtual, typically offering presentations where you can ask questions specific to your situation. Also, most virtual workshops are now archived for a specific amount of time, so you can listen to them several times to hear comments and answers to questions as you work through your grant writing process. But those are not the only benefits of attending a workshop. It can also allow you to:

  • Discuss examples of potential partnerships or sample project ideas that programs are looking to fund.

  • Meet others like-minded people in similar lines of work, with the potential for future collaboration.

  • Discover other sources of funding for the types of projects you are attempting, or find new upcoming grants you may not have known about.

  • Get real-time comments or insight into your document or grant proposal.

It can be helpful for more than one person from your organization to participate in a workshop. It is typically preferable if you have the person who is primarily responsible for writing your grants, as well as at least one person who is responsible for developing your grant-funded project(s).

Generally having multiple people involved in the workshop leads to better results because discussing the information presented in real-time can give you a better understanding of what the presenter meant—or help clarify something you did not quite grasp.
